Foot Problems Linked to Swimming: What You Should Know

Published On: 28 May 2025

Swimming is great for fitness and well-being but it can pose risks for your feet. Pools and changing areas create the perfect conditions for certain foot problems to develop.

Here’s what to look out for and when to speak to a podiatrist.

Fungal Nail Infections

Public pools are warm and damp – ideal for fungal growth. Infections often start with a discoloured patch under the nail, usually white or yellowish-brown. The nail can become thick, crumbly or even lift away from the nail bed. Broken edges leave skin open to bacteria and in rare cases, infection can spread into the bloodstream.

At Epsom Footcare, we can reduce the infected nail, advise on treatments and monitor progress.

Athlete’s Foot

This fungal infection thrives in warm, moist environments like poolside tiles and showers. It usually appears between the toes or anywhere that stays damp. Look for red, itchy, flaky skin or small blisters. If left untreated, it spreads fast and causes painful cracks.

We can recommend creams or medication to clear it quickly.

Verrucas

These are caused by a virus that enters through tiny cuts or scrapes. They usually appear on the sole, especially on the heel or ball of the foot. A verruca looks like a hard patch of skin with a small black dot in the centre. They can become painful when you walk.

At Epsom Footcare, we use Swift microwave therapy to treat verrucas effectively.

Cracked Heels

Prolonged time in water strips your skin of natural oils. This can dry out your heels, leading to deep cracks or splits. These fissures can become painful and may allow bacteria to enter.

We treat cracked heels with creams, removal of hard skin and practical advice for long-term care.

Protecting Your Feet at the Pool

There are simple ways to avoid most foot issues while swimming:

  • Wear flip-flops in changing rooms and poolside
  • Use waterproof swim socks if you’re prone to infections
  • Shower after swimming and dry feet thoroughly, especially between toes
  • Moisturise regularly to maintain healthy skin
