8 top tips to maintain healthy feet

Published On: 11 April 2023

Did you know the average person will walk around 74,462 miles in their lifetime; this is why our feet are so important as they help us get where we need to go. Unfortunately we often forget this, not giving our feet much thought and perhaps even neglecting them, until an issue crops up and starts affecting daily life.

In this article we share our top 8 tips to avoid any problems and keep your feet in great shape so you can stay pain free and active.

1. Wash your feet every day

Wash your feet using warm, soapy water and once you’ve finished make sure to dry your feet well, especially between your toes as this will help prevent fungal infections and athlete’s foot.

2. Cut your toenails

Using proper nail clippers make sure to cut them straight across. Do not cut them too short and do not cut your nails down at the corners as this can lead to ingrowing toenails. If you find it a struggle to cut your nails, you can try filing them once or twice a week instead.

3. Moisturise

If you are struggling with dry skin on your feet, put moisturiser on them before you go to bed; preferably a cream containing urea, avoiding in between the toes as this can lead to fungal infections.

4. Wear the right socks

Make sure to wear well-fitting, clean, socks, preferably made from natural fibres such as cotton or bamboo and change them every day to avoid sweaty feet and potential fungal infections.

5. Wear the correct footwear

It’s important to make sure your shoes are the right size for your feet. If you are going to buy footwear we suggest going in the afternoon as this is when your feet are at their biggest. If you aren’t sure about the size you need, get your feet measured.

6. Rotate your shoes

Try not to wear the same shoes two days in a row; giving them a chance to air will reduce your chances of developing a fungal infection.

7. Vary your heel height

Keep high heels for special occasions as regular use can damage your feet.

8. If you do start to have any issues with your feet or have any concerns see a Podiatrist
