Preparing Your Feet for Ski Season

Published On: 22 January 2024

Skiing can place immense demands on your feet. With constant pressure, impact, and varying temperatures, it’s so important to take care of your feet this season. Below are our top tips to best prepare your feet for ski season:

1. Choose the right footwear

Ski boots come in a variety of shapes and stiffness so we suggest having your ski boots properly fitted by a boot fitter to ensure they are right for you. They will ensure your boots are the right size and fit snugly without causing pressure points or constriction.

Getting your foot to fit correctly in a ski boot isn’t always easy, depending on the shape and position of your foot. If you are struggling with this, your podiatrist can help and also make recommendations of ski boot fitters.

2. Try conditioning exercises

Strengthening the muscles in your feet and ankles through targeted exercises can improve overall stability and reduce the risk of injury. Before embarking on what could be a trip of a lifetime it’s important to have foot pain or concerns addressed. During sports like skiing we use lots of muscle groups, your podiatrist can work with you to identify problematic areas and formulate a suitable strengthening plan .

3. Wear the right socks

Opt for moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry and reduce your risk of blisters. It’s important to wear the right socks when skiing. We recommend talking to either your boot fitter or podiatrist. Generally merino wool keeps your feet a little warmer and synthetic socks are low profile with padding where you need it.

4. Good foot hygiene

Keep your feet clean and dry to prevent fungal infections. Additionally, for a ski boot to be fitted correctly it may feel a little tighter on your foot. It’s therefore really important to make sure your nails are cut correctly to avoid painful ingrown toenails. If you are concerned about this, speak to your podiatrist.

5. Visit a podiatrist if you have foot or ankle concerns

If you are having pain in your feet leading up to, during, or after our trip, make sure to visit your podiatrist. We can help with all sorts of feet and ankle issues and can ensure your feet are in peak condition, ready for your next trip.
